About this course

About the course

This course introduces students to basic but useful techniques for manipulating the most common data formats encountered in library work: delimted, MARC (MAchine Readable Cataloging) and XML (Extensible Markup Language). By the end of the course, you will be able to use many of Perl's features, and you will be able to work with simple examples of the above data types. Hopefully, you will also gain some enthusiasm for learning more about programming.

One clarification: this course does not cover connecting to databases using Perl or using Perl to create dynamic websites. Doing anything useful with databases or dynamic websites should be considered "intermediate" to "advanced" topics and are outside the scope of this course.
